The chambers, and how they may be reached

The address, telephone number, email address, hours and languages of the chambers are set out below. They are published for information. Anyone who wishes to consult the advocate may use them, at their own instance. Consultations are by prior appointment only.

The papers a matter usually turns on

On either side of a matter, the same small set of papers ordinarily makes up the record. This is a list of documents, not advice on any particular matter.

The Cheque

The cheque itself, with the cheque number and the date it bears clearly legible.

The Bank Return Memo

The memo recording the reason for the dishonour, and the date on which it was received — the thirty-day period under clause (b) of the proviso runs from that date.

Record of the Debt

Invoices, agreements, ledgers or correspondence evidencing the underlying transaction.

Particulars of the Drawer

The full name and last known address of the person or company by whom the cheque was drawn.

The Dates

The date on the cheque, the date of dishonour, the date of receipt of the return memo, and the dates of any notice issued or received.

Before an Engagement

What stands between contact and an engagement

Making contact and being engaged are two different things, and the second does not follow from the first. What stands between them is set out below, for information.

The Sequence

A conflict check is made first. Before an engagement is accepted, a check is made for any interest or connection with a party or with the controversy. Where one exists it is disclosed, and the engagement is declined where the rules so require.
The relationship arises on acceptance, and not before. A lawyer-client relationship arises only when an engagement is accepted after that check and the terms of the engagement have been agreed.
Nothing earlier creates it. None of the following creates a lawyer-client relationship: reading this website, sending a message to the particulars on it, telephoning the chambers, or fixing an appointment, and no opinion is given on a matter before the papers have been read.
The papers are read at the consultation. The documents a matter ordinarily turns on are listed above. Confidential material is not to be sent by unsolicited message; it is brought to the consultation, where it can be read properly.
A consultation may be held in English, Hindi, Marathi or Tamil. All communications are treated as confidential, whether or not an engagement follows.

Particulars of the chambers

The particulars of the chambers follow. Making contact is entirely at the visitor’s own instance and does not create a lawyer-client relationship.

  • An appointment is ordinarily sought by written message on the number below, by email, or through the appointment diary; the same number may be telephoned, though a message is preferred
  • Consultations by prior appointment only, at the chambers at Malad West, Mumbai — Monday to Saturday, 10 AM–5 PM
  • A consultation is ordinarily attended at the chambers; where a person is not in Mumbai, it may be held by telephone or by video link. The mode is settled when the appointment is fixed, and may be settled on the appointment diary itself
  • Consultations held in English, Hindi, Marathi or Tamil — all four are spoken and understood
  • Matters on either side of Section 138 — holders and persons served with a notice or summons
  • No advice is given on a matter over the telephone; a call, a message or the diary serves to fix the appointment at which the papers are read
  • A consultation is chargeable; what it costs is stated when the appointment is made, before it is attended. Fixing the appointment is not itself a consultation and nothing is charged for it
  • All communications treated as confidential

Reaching the Chambers

Each of the particulars below reaches the chambers. The first, second and fourth reach it directly; the appointment diary is kept by an outside service. A written message is preferred to a call: it is read in turn, and it settles the appointment in one exchange — a message giving a name and a convenient time is answered with a time, and with what the consultation costs, in the same reply.

The same number. A message is preferred to a call, because a message is read and answered in order and a call ordinarily is not. No advice is given on a matter over the telephone, and no opinion is given before the papers have been read. A call placed outside chambers hours may be returned on the next working day.

Choose a time and a mode

Opens a scheduling page kept by an outside service. It shows the times still open within chambers hours, and the three modes in which a consultation may be held — at the chambers, by telephone, or by video link. Only a name and one telephone or email particular are asked for. No case details are to be entered there. Where a video link is chosen, the joining link is issued with the confirmation of the appointment. The appointment is confirmed from the chambers.

The appointment diary is operated by Calendly LLC, United States. It asks only for a name and contact details. No case details are asked for or should be given.

This website collects nothing. There is no enquiry form, no chat box and no widget on it, and nothing typed into it leaves the browser. The appointment diary is not part of this website: it is a page kept by an outside service, opened only if the visitor chooses to open it. It asks for a name and one contact particular, so a time can be held.

Please do not send cheque particulars, case papers or confidential information through it, or by unsolicited message. Bring the documents to the consultation, where they can be read properly. Anyone who would rather not use an outside service may send a message to that number, telephone it, or write by email — each reaches the chambers directly.

On what a consultation costs. A consultation is chargeable. What it costs is stated when the appointment is made, so that it is known before the appointment is attended and not after. No figure is published on this website, and none is quoted for a matter without the papers having been seen.

Consultations are by prior appointment only, Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM. Contacting the chambers does not create a lawyer-client relationship; all communications are treated as confidential.
